bite-sized challenge: a smoothie a day

May 19, 2010

And make it a green one.  If you look at Noelle’s list of successful outcomes, the first is:

I rarely eat processed food – I almost always eat fresh food.

The quickest way I know of to get more whole, plant-based food into your diet is to chug or slurp one large green smoothie a day.  I’ve written about the magic of green smoothies before, and you can try one of my favorite recipes here.  But you really don’t need a recipe at all: just lots of greens (spinach is flavor-neutral) and then fruit to sweeten it out.  I normally put a banana in mine to make it creamy and then top it up with any variety of chopped fruit I keep in the freezer.

This one little change is a great kick-start and is really motivating since it’s so easy to do.  You can have the smoothie as a snack or even in place of a meal – it’s more filling than you might think.

This challenge goes for the next two weeks so everyone has plenty of time to perfect their smoothie moves.  But keep checking the comments section, because Noelle will be posting her experience being a newbie to green smoothies.  And I know some of you are green-smoothie veterans, so please chime in to support Noelle!

I’m so glad to hear that, Katy! Thanks so much for posting. I am definitely not the original creator of the green smoothie, but that combination came together for me one day and I thought it was good enough to share. :) Can’t wait to hear how you experiment with your own!

    Hi Jessica

Just drinking your Drink Your Greens smoothie, it’s sooo good! Did you invent it? Perfect combination, would never have thought to put all that together.

It has been a meal replacement tonight!

I look forward to trying more.

    Hello Jessica!

As you know, you brought the idea of having a smoothie a day on my radar a couple of months ago. Only in the last few weeks have I been attempting it (now that I have the blender sorted out thanks to my flatmates!) :) Here are some thoughts:

    > The smoothies are so tasty! I was not expecting them to taste so good! :) I’ve only tried two of your recipes so far (of which only one counts as “green”!) but these two are fantastic (“drink your greens smoothie” and “coconut chocolate monkey.”) If the rest are this good, I will be hooked for life!

    > Because they taste so good, I have *no* resistance to making them. In fact, the thought of a smoothie (especially in the hot weather) sounds better than a lot of meals I could put together…

    > They can replace a meal, n’est-ce pas ? Before I got going with them, I was envisaging them as a supplement to a proper meal. But what I soon learned was that I was basically full after downing one. :)

    > It’s very easy to improvise! I get the general idea now, and have already started being creative with the recipes. I have to say however: your recipes are better than my improvisations! ;)

So, sorry to gush so much…! Next post will be about things I need to work on so that I can get closer to my goal of enjoying a smoothie *every* day (instead of every two or three days, etc.) Also, I have a few questions to ask you about ingredients!

    Un gran abrazo,
    N
